Chandigarh, January 28

While the UT traffic police plan to start a challaning drive from February 1 to enforce lane driving, markings on various roads are either faded or missing.

On several roads in the city, including stretches on Dakshin Marg and roads in southern sectors, the markings are either faded or not visible. The markings are necessary to ensure lane driving.

City resident RK Garg said the challans should not be issued when signboards and road markings were not fixed and the work was incomplete. “The traffic police should put its system in order, educate people and then start issuing challans,” he said. Harpreet Singh Walia, a resident of Sector 45, said at many roads, the markings had faded. The UT police should first get them repainted so that the motorists do not face any difficulty in following lane driving.

To ensure smooth flow of traffic in the city, the UT police have decided to start challaning motorists for violation of lane driving, blocking the way of left-turning vehicles and stopping vehicles on the roadside of main carriageways from February 1 onwards.

However, the police have not carried any awareness drive to educate people about these offences. — TNS
