Chandigarh, February 17

The Special CBI Court here today held Sub-Inspector Balbir Singh of the UT police guilty of taking a bribe of Rs 35,000 for giving a clean chit to the complainant in a case registered against him.

Special CBI Judge Sushil Kumar Garg will pronounce the quantum of the sentence tomorrow. The case dates back to March 17, 2015, when the CBI had arrested Sub-Inspector Balbir Singh, posted at the Mani Majra police station, while taking a bribe of Rs 35,000 at the police station late in the evening.

The CBI had stated that it had received a complaint from a Mani Majra resident, who claimed that the SI was demanding Rs 50,000 in an inquiry marked to him. The complainant, Suresh, was a witness in a marriage in July 2014. He was a witness from the groom’s side. After a few months, the couple had a fight, following which the woman alleged that she was forcibly married to the man. She also levelled allegations against the witness, the CBI said.

The woman complained to the UT SSP, who directed the SHO, Mani Majra, to conduct an inquiry into the complaint. The inquiry was further marked to SI Balbir Singh. The SI was demanding money from the complainant to give him a clean chit in the inquiry. The deal was struck for Rs 35,000 following which the complainant went to the Mani Majra police station to hand over the money. CBI sleuths caught Balbir Singh while taking the bribe. — TNS
