CBI arrests Uttrakhand cop from Chandigarh while ‘accepting’ bribe from taxi driver

Had allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh for not taking action against complainant in cheating case

The anti-graft probe agency CBI on Saturday said it has arrested a Sub-Inspector of Uttrakhand Police for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 5 lakh and collecting the first tranche of Rs 1 lakh in Chandigarh from a local taxi driver.   

The arrested Sub-Inspector of Uttarakhand Police Hemant Khanduri is posted at Police Station Cantt, Dehradun.

“A case was registered on a complaint alleging that accused Khanduri was demanding a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from the complainant for not taking action against him whose name had cropped up in a case of cheating lodged at Police Station Cantt, Dehradun,” CBI spokesperson RC Joshi said.

The spokesperson said the CBI had laid a trap in Chandigarh wherein the Sub Inspector of the Uttarakhand Police “was caught red handed while demanding & accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh as part payment”. 

He said, searches at two residential places of the accused in Dehradun were being conducted and certain incrementing documents and other evidence were recovered. The arrested accused would be produced in a local court tomorrow, he added.
