Panchkula, January 17

An unidentified masked man allegedly stole Rs50,000 and a gold ring from the cash box of a grocery store at Rajiv Colony in Sector 17 on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

The complainant, Anurag Mittal of Sector 16, told the police that the suspect entered his shop, Mahamai Kirana and General Store, after breaking the locks of the shutter.

He said his neighbour, who saw the suspect committing the crime, raised the alarm. When he yelled and tried to catch the thief, he ran into a lane. “I rushed to the shop and found the locks of the shutter damaged. Upon checking the cash box, I found ‘786’ serial number notes, around Rs50,000, and a gold ring, weighing 6 gm, kept in it missing. I informed the police, who visited the spot,” he said. A case was registered under Sections 380 (theft in dwelling house) and 457 (lurking house trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit an offence punishable with imprisonment) of the IPC at the Sector 14 police station. —
