Chandigarh, March 17

Motivated by the decision of his relatives to donate organs of their deceased son Ravi Kapoor (29) on July 17, 2019, Dharam Pal from Mani Majra, braving his own gravest tragedy of untimely loss of his wife Rekha (50), consented for her organ donation.

Prof Vipin Koushal, nodal officer, ROTTO (NORTH), said on March 11, Dharam Pal with his wife Rekha was going on their two-wheeler to a nearby place when they were hit by a rashly driven car. Pal escaped with minor injuries, while his wife suffered fatal head injuries.

The critically injured Rekha was referred to the PGIMER on March 12. Despite best of the medical attention, Rekha lost her battle with life on March 14 due to cardiac arrest.

Showcasing indomitable spirit, Pal agreed to donate the organs of his demised wife.

He said, “It’s very devastating to lose your spouse and we are doomed by this tragedy. But I believe that our organs are very precious even after our death. I said ‘yes’ for organ donation of my wife so that some other family does not face the cruel fate like us.”

Due to cardiac arrest, the opportunity to retrieve other organs barring kidneys was lost. Only one kidney was found usable, which gave a new life to one terminally ill patient, who had been on the waiting list.
