38-yr-old man thrashed to death in Dera Bassi

Accused lands in police net; sent to judicial custody

A 38-year-old man died after being thrashed by a person in Mubarakpur, Dera Bassi, here, late last night.

The deceased has been identified as Mangal Singh, a resident of Mubarakpur, Dera Bassi.

The police have arrested the accused, identified as Balkar Singh, who is working in the Municipal Council, Zirakpur. He was produced in a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

ASI Kulwant Singh, Mubarakpur police post in-charge, said Mangal Singh and Balkar Singh had heated arguments around 10 pm on Wednesday. Later, Balkar thrashed Mangal, who fell unconscious. The victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The ASI said Mangal Singh’s daughter was married to a man in Pinjore. Due to some dispute, she got separated from her husband. She was again married in Lalru. Later, she lodged a complaint against her in-laws for harassing her. On this, Balkar Singh, who was acting as a middleman to settle the dispute, told Mangal Singh that he was a habitual offender of breaking the ties. Enraged over this, the duo had a heated argument. Later, Balkar thrashed Mangal, leaving him unconscious.

The ASI said Balkar had been arrested for causing death due to negligence not amounting to culpable homicide following the statement of the deceased’s wife Radha. A case under Sections 304, 323 and 506 of the IPC had been registered against the accused.
