Chandigarh, January 27

Three miscreants riding an auto-rickshaw robbed a girl at knifepoint, who had hired the vehicle for the city from Kumbra Chowk in Mohali, this morning. The auto was chased by a PCR vehicle after the victim raised the alarm. The auto, however, overturned following which the three suspects managed to escape in the forest area of Sector 51.

The police said a PCR vehicle ambulance with incharge Ravinder Kumar and driver, a Head Constable, on board were patrolling near the Sector 50/51 small chowk when they noticed a girl riding an auto crying for help. The cops chased the auto and tried to stop it. The auto driver attempted a U-turn following which the three-wheeler turned turtle.

The police said the three suspects escaped in the forest area of Sector 51.

The control room was informed about the incident following which PCR vehicles and a team of the Sector 49 police station reached the spot and searched the forest area. However, the suspects had managed to flee.

The victim, who is a qualified nurse and resides at a PG accommodation in Mohali, had hired the auto for Chandigarh as she had to enquire about a job in the city. When the auto reached near the Burail jail, the two suspects sitting in the rear seat overpowered her and threatened her with a knife. The victim was robbed of her purse.

The police said the victim didn’t suffer any injury in the incident.

A case of dacoity has been registered at the Sector 49 police station and an investigation has been initiated into it.

The police said the auto had been impounded and efforts were being made to identify the suspects.
