Wholesale inflation eases to 3-month low of 0.27%

On the back of cooling food and vegetable prices, the wholesale price index-based inflation eased to a three-month low of 0.27 per cent in January as compared to the same month last year. The wholesale price index (WPI) in December 2023 was 0.73 per cent and at 0.39 per cent in November.

Fall in food prices behind dip

According to the latest figures, retail inflation or consumer price index-related inflation rate has also eased to a three-month low of 5.1 per cent in January mainly due to relatively lower food prices as compared to the previous months.

On a month-to-month basis, the WPI remained in the deflationary zone and was recorded at minus 0.33 per cent in January as compared to minus 0.98 per cent in December 2023 and 0.39 per cent in November.

On a year-to-year basis, inflation in primary articles was 3.84 per cent, minus 0.512 per cent in fuel and primary articles and minus 1.13 per cent. In food articles, the rate of inflation was 3.79 per cent as against 5.39 per cent in December 2023. On a month-to-month basis, inflation in primary articles was minus 0.4 per cent, 0.39 per cent in fuel and primary articles and minus 0.21 per cent. In food articles, the rate of inflation was minus 1.06 per cent.
