GST collections remain above Rs 140 lakh-crore for 5th straight month

The gross GST revenue collected in July is Rs 1,48,995 crore, the second highest intake since the introduction of this omnibus tax.

For five months in a row now, monthly GST revenues have been more than Rs 1.4 lakh-crore, showing a steady increase every month. The growth in GST revenue till July 2022 over the same period last year is 35 per cent and displays a very high buoyancy. During the month of June, 7.45 crore e-way bills were generated, which was marginally higher than 7.36 crore in May, stated a government statement.

Gross GST revenue collected in June was Rs 1.44 lakh-crore and Rs 1.41 lakh-crore in May. Monthly collections are still to touch the record mop-up of Rs 1.68 lakh-crore in April, but that the figures remain above Rs 140 lakh-crore for five straight months suggests a certain stabilisation. That opportunity might come on September 1 when the government will announce the intake for the month of July that saw GST being imposed on several daily use articles.

Better reporting coupled with economic recovery has been having a positive impact on the GST revenues on a consistent basis, added the statement which did not mention the swelling of the government’s kitty due to an inflation rate that is running at over seven per cent.

Among north Indian states, the intake from Himachal rose to Rs 746 crore in July from Rs 693 crore in June. Like in the case of Punjab, a decreasing trend was reversed. GST intake for Himachal was Rs 741 crore in May and Rs 817 crore in April.

The collection from Punjab rose to Rs 1,733 crore, reversing the fall in the previous months. The GST collection had fallen to Rs 1,683 crore in June from Rs 1,833 crore in May and Rs 1,994 crore in April.

In Haryana, collections maintained a rising trend for two consecutive months. GST in July from the state rose to Rs 6,791 in July as against 6,714 crore in June, Rs6,663 crore in May and Rs 8,197 crore in April.

The intake from Delhi rose a fraction to Rs 4,327 crore in July from Rs 4,313 crore in June. GST from Delhi was Rs 4,113 crore in May. Chandigarh collections also rose from Rs 170 crore in June to Rs 176 crore in July. It was Rs 167 crore in May. Collections from J&K rose to Rs 431 crore in July from Rs 372 crore each in the previous two years.
