Boy snatches phone, nabbed

Chandigarh: People nabbed an 18-year-old boy while he was escaping after snatching a mobile from a woman. The complainant said she was travelling in an e-rickshaw on Thursday when a boy, a co-passenger, snatched her phone and escaped near Gobindpura, Mani Majra. She raised the alarm, following which passersby chased him down. The police reached the spot and arrested the boy, Niranjan, of Budhanpur village in Sector 16, Panchkula. A case has been registered against him at the Mani Majra police station. TNS

Festival secretariat inaugurated

Chandigarh: The festival secretariat of the 11th Panjab University Rose Festival to be held from February 7 to 9 was inaugurated by the university Registrar here on Friday. Registrar Prof Karamjeet Singh appreciated the website of the Rose Festival, particularly the online registration for competitions and efforts of the organising committee. TNS

PU prof gets ICSSR research project

Chandigarh: Dr Gulshan Kumar, Professor of Economics at University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been granted a Major Research Project titled, “Assessing Quality of Life of Transgenders in India: A Case Study of Tricity (Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula)” of Rs 9 lakh rupees by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. The research project proposes to assess the quality of life of transgenders and endeavours to work out their dependence level on various socio-economic conditions prevalent in this region. Perceptions of people in this area about transgenders will also be recorded. TNS

ATAL workshop on robotics

Chandigarh: A one-week AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) workshop on robotics oorganised by the UIET from January 13 to 17 concluded here on Friday. Prof Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, was the chief guest at the valedictory function. Prof Savita Gupta, Director, UIET, was the guest of honor. Participants from all over India attended the workshop covering almost all states such as Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Haryana, West Bengal and Punjab. As many as 14 experts from industry and different institutions from all over India delivered expert lectures in the area of robotics during the workshop. TNS

Literacy workshop for potters

Chandigarh: The Enactus team of Panjab University organised a financial literacy and design workshop for the potters of Maloya, Chandigarh, under the Dhra project. The aim was to enlighten the potter community with budgeting and saving strategies. Enactus is an international non-profit organisation that works for the uplif of society through the creation of entrepreneurs. The aim was to promote the art of pottery and eradicate the use of plastic cutlery, said Prof Seema Kapoor, faculty adviser, Enactus. TNS

Man held with banned vials

Chandigarh: A Sector 56 resident has been arrested by the Chandigarh Police while possessing banned injections. According to the police, the suspect, identified as Kishan, a resident of Sector 56, was arrested from near a petrol pump in Sector 56 while possessing 22 banned injections. A case has been registered. TNS

Two arrested with 3 pistols

Ambala: The police have arrested two persons – Ravi Kumar, alias Baba, and Vishvas, alias Chhotu, of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh – and claimed to have recovered 3 illegal pistols and 9 live cartridges from their possession. According to the police, a Mahindra Scorpio vehicle was signalled to stop at a check post near Hariyali dhaba on the Naraingarh-Kala Amb road in Naraingarh on the basis of suspicion. On seeing the police party, the two occupants tried to flee from the spot. However, the cops apprehended them. Their search yielded the illegal arms and ammunition, on which code words such as “BMM, KF and BWL” were inscribed. The suspects were remanded to 14-day judicial custody. TNS

Two nabbed with 5.67-gram heroin

Ambala: The police have arrested two persons – Pardeep Kumar and Ram Saran, alias Punjabi, of Saha near here. They claimed to have recovered 5.67 grams of heroin from the possession of Kumar, officials said here on Friday. According to the police, Kumar was intercepted on the basis of a tip-off at a check post in Saha and his search yielded the contraband. During preliminary interrogation, the suspect told the police that Punjabi was involved in the illegal drug trade. The duo will be produced before a court on Saturday. TNS

Proclaimed offender held

Ambala: The police have arrested a proclaimed offender, Mohan Lal of Shahzadpur near here, who was wanted in a criminal case registered against him at the Shahzadpur police station. According to the police, the accused was evading arrest ever since he was booked by the police, following which he was declared a proclaimed offender by a local court. The arrested fugitive will be produced before a local court on Saturday. TNS

Two persons go missing in Ambala

Ambala: A teenage girl and a newly-wed woman reportedly went missing from their respective places in separate incidents, the police said here on Friday. According to information, Rakesh Kumar of Parao near here had reported to the police that his 19-year-old daughter had left home on January 15, but did not return yet. In a separate incident, Shahnu Ram of Naraingarh near here had reported to the police that his 28-year-old daughter-in-law had left home on December 23 last, but did not return yet. The police have lodged missing reports. TNS

Netball trials on January 21

Chandigarh: The Netball Sports Promotion Association, Chandigarh, will on January 21 conduct trials to select the men’s and women’s teams for the 37th Senior National Netball Championship, scheduled to be held at Anandpur Sahib from February 5-8. The trails will be held at Panjab University from 3 pm, said the sports body. TNS
