Unions condemn Delhi violence

Members of various mass organisations on Wednesday staged a protest near grain market and took out a march against the Union Government for “failing” to prevent incidents of violence in Delhi. They burnt an effigy of the Union Government near District Administrative Complex.

Several protesters from both sides, those protesting for and against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), have clashed in Delhi, resulting in over 20 deaths. Members of organisations, including BKU (Ekta Ugrahan), BKU (Ekta Dakonda), Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union, Naujawan Bharat Sabha and Punjab Students Union and people from the Muslim community participated in the protest here.

Shingara Singh Mann, president of BKU (Ugrahan), said: “Now, the Union Government has resorted to using force against the anti-CAA protesters to suppress their voice. The brazen attempts at dividing the nation on communal lines and targeting a particular community will not be tolerated.”

The protesters also criticised the Centre for its plan to sign a trade deal with the US. “The proposed Indo-US trade deal and defence agreements are against the interests of the country,” Mann said,” Mann added.

The protesters said they would hold state-wide protests against the Union Government at Malerkotla on the International Women’s Day on March 8.
