Safai karamchari panel chief inspects Faridkot medical college

The Chairman of the State Safai Karamchari Commission, Gejja Ram Valmiki, conducted a surprise inspection of Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital here on Monday. He expressed concern over the cleanliness condition in the hospital.

“I have come to know that 267 sanitation workers are working in the hospital. But during my visit to different departments, laboratories and kitchen, I did not find even 67 workers performing their duty,” he said. The Chairman said these workers had been outsourced by a contractor, but the bad condition of cleanliness in the hospital revealed that they were not performing their duties.

During the inspection, the Chairman was accompanied by the DC and senior hospital officials. “I will bring the issue to the notice of the state government. If the situation does not improve in the coming days, I have asked the DC to stop the salary of these outsourced employees,” he added.

The Chairman said he had conducted the surprise inspection after receiving many complaints of poor cleanliness in the hospital.

The hospital authorities said safai karamcharis work under the contractor and it is his responsibility to get the work done from workers.

“The hospital authorities desist from using any force on these outsourced employees to get the work done as there is a lingering threat of going on a strike by them,” said a senior hospital official.

The Chairman also expressed concern over poor hygienic conditions in canteens of the hospital.

Earlier at a meeting with district administration officials, he said the State Safai Karamchari Commission is committed to the welfare of sanitation workers.

He said all pending issues or demands of workers would be redressed on a priority basis. “If any sanitation worker dies on duty, all dues and benefits should be provided to the family within time. The workers should get their salaries before the contractor and government officials,” the Chairman added.
