4,002 cases registered in Bathinda dist in 2019

The district witnessed a slight rise in crime in 2019 as compared to last year. As many as 4,002 cases were registered in 2019 as compared to 3,998 cases registered in the district in 2018.

As per the police records, the maximum cases (974) were registered under the Excise Act, followed by 677 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Besides, under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), theft cases topped the list at 196, followed by 194 cases of cheating (Section 420) and 185 cases of burglary (Sections 454 and 460).

Even 127 cases of causing grievous hurt (Sections 325 and 326) were reported while 100 cases of snatching (Section 379-B) were witnessed in the district.

Despite much discussion over the rising crimes against women across the country, 92 cases of rape (Section 376), 46 molestation (Section 354), 79 cases of cruelty by husband and relatives (Section 498-A) were registered in the district. However, no case of eve-teasing was reported. While 78 cases of kidnapping or abduction (Section 363/366) were reported in the district, 40 cases were registered under the Gambling Act.

The district also witnessed many serious crimes as 65 cases of attempt to murder (Section 307) and 39 cases of murder (Section 302) had also been reported. Ten cases of culpable homicide (Section 304), eight robbery cases (Section 392-394) and 823 cases under other sections of the IPC were registered in the district. Also, 19 cases had been reported under the Arms Act.

Moreover, one acid attack and four dowry death cases had been reported. While 120 cases of death due to negligence (Section 304-A), 10 cases of extortion and blackmailing were also registered. Even three cases of arson had been registered.

Bathinda SSP Nanak Singh said: “Reducing crime and tackling cases more effectively will be our priority this year. The police were planning to organise awareness drives to sensitise people to crimes, he added.
