WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Saturday nominated General Mark Milley as his next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation''s top military advisor.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday nominated General Mark Milley as his next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation's top military advisor.

If confirmed by the Senate, Gen Milley would replace General Joe Dunford who is scheduled to retire next summer. Milley currently is Chief of Staff of the Army.

"I am pleased to announce my nomination of four-star General Mark Milley, Chief of Staff of the United States Army  as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replacing General Joe Dunford, who will be retiring," Trump said in a tweet.

Milley has served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I am thankful to both of these incredible men for their service to our country! Date of transition to be determined," Trump said ahead of the Army-Navy football game later in the day, which he is scheduled to attend. - PTI
