Cairo, October 4

At least seven people, including children and women, have been killed and two others injured in Egypt's Shubra district after a four-storey residential building collapsed, security officials said.

"The building which collapsed late yesterday was undergoing some renovation works," said Gamal Halawa, the director of civil protection forces.

Halawa said that the civil protection forces and ambulances are currently searching for survivors under the rubble.

Building collapses are common in Egypt due to illegal extensions and failure to adopt construction guidelines.

Last year, 19 people were killed and eight others injured when an eight-storey building collapsed in Matariya district.

The collapse was caused by unauthorised construction of several extra stories on the old building. —PTI
