Universities and “Failed” Students.

Show comments

IN order to obviate overcrowding in college and lighten the burden of the cost of education, a proposal is made by our Nagpur contemporary Hitavada, that "failed" students of colleges affiliated to Allahabad University in the arts and science faculties may be allowed to reappear for the succeeding examinations for BA and Intermediate in Arts or Science without a certificate of attendance. This privilege is allowed to the Law College students of the university, and it can for the same reason be extended to the BA students and Intermediate students who have failed in one or two subjects. In Bombay University, our contemporary points out, unsuccessful candidates are not required to keep fresh terms, and recently Madras University reverted to its original practice of allowing such students to appear for succeeding examinations. We think it stands to reason that students who happen to get plucked in one or two subjects, after keeping terms once should not be required to go through the regular course once again, which is a costly luxury creating overcrowding of classes.
