Third Class Railway Passengers.

Show comments

ONE of the resolutions passed at the Madras Provincial Conference held at Madras referred to the grievances of third class railway passengers. This is a subject of standing complaint of the people of India. They were silently suffering the hardship so far, but a stage has arrived at which protest is necessary. We have pointed out how the traffic receipts have increased by over 33 per cent. in the five years and how the railway companies have failed to provide convenience, while pocketing the increased profits. The resolution requests Government to bring to the notice of the railways administrations the hardship caused by overcrowding. No reference is made to the device of pulling the alarm chord as a protest against the continued neglect of the railway authorities. But Madras will not be slow to adopt this method.
