The Press Act in Mysore

Show comments

MYSORE has just taken a step in the right direction by modifying its press regulation. There, as in British India, the existence of the press law is a matter of just and legitimate grievance to the people who have again and again asked for its repeal. His Highness's Government have favourably considered the representations of the people and decided to alter the regulation so as to rid of one of its most objectionable features. They consider that "before action is taken against any newspaper under the regulation opportunity should be afforded to the editor or other person concerned to state his defence and explain the position with reference to the charges brought against him." They have accordingly directed that a quasi-judicial enquiry shall be held before action is taken. The enquiry shall be conducted by a judge of the Chief Court and the editor or other person concerned will be allowed to be represented by counsel.
