The Premier''s Explanation

Show comments

THE Premier made an important statement on Tuesday on the circumstances leading to the severance of Sir William Robertson's connection with the General Staff. The retention of Sir William Robertson as Chief of the Staff, he said, had latterly been incompatible with the Allies' common policy based on the assumption that the Allies had suffered in the past through lack of concerted and co-ordinated effort. While paying a high tribute to Sir William Robertson, he confronted his opponents with a veritable dilemma. If the policy decided upon at Versailles, he said, was right, no personalities, however valuable, important or distinguished, should stand in the way of its execution.
