The English Grace that Cannot Survive in India.

Show comments

MR. Eardley Norton in his Reminiscences published in this week’s issue of the Looker-On has something to say of the grace which cannot always be expected to survive in India. Writing about the dainty poet, Mr. Andrew Lang, Mr. Norton recalls the fact that he was the Secretary of the Hour, a London daily, and Andrew Lang, a fairly regular contributor. After referring to some of the more conspicuous personal traits of that gifted author, who was “worshipped by those who knew him well”, Mr. Norton observes: “I left England too soon to win my way into this inner circle. I stayed out of England too long to hope for admission later. But whenever I met him in London, I found the same grace which shed a lustre upon letters and met the less gifted with the divine assurance that for them too there was a welcome corner in the world’s scheme.”
