State vs. company management of railways

Show comments

SIR Ibrahim Rahimtullah's resolution to consider the desirability of the future policy in regard to State railways being one of management by Government instead of by companies has been accepted by Government. We have to thank Government also for anticipating it by having already taken up the enquiry with the sanction of the Secretary of State. Sir Ibrahim had the support practically of every Indian member with the exception of new member, Mr. Setalvad, who has stepped into Mr Gokhale's place. This last named member opposed the resolution in imitation of the representative of the Bengal and Bombay Chambers of Commerce. We are not quite sure that in so doing Mr. Setalvad was also voicing the opinion of his constituency. If he in this instance has gone against the wishes of his constituency he will have to explain his attitude.
