Sanskrit and Citizenship.

THE Hon’ble Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, speaking in Madras on the 28th January, advocated a more extensive study of Sanskrit by all Indians. Sanskrit literature contains the treasures of ancient culture and knowledge whose effect is somewhat impaired by translations. Those who value the ancient lore of the Hindus should know something of Sanskrit and facilities should be provided to this end. “The time is not far distant,” he said, “When a certain amount of Sanskrit knowledge will be regarded as essential in the case of every decent Hindu boy. I do not think it is difficult to secure that knowledge. My own belief is that they should be able to devise a system by means of which in the course of a year or two a boy should be able to understand the simple slokas of Ramayana and Mahabharata.”
