Sanitation of Lahore.

THOUGH Lahore is not as dirty as it once was, we are still unable to bring it on line with other cities of equal extent and importance in being up-to-date. The condition of the septic tank, the methods of removing night soil, the market, Infectious Diseases Hospital, Tuberculosis Dispensary and Mela Ram's tank were some of the subjects commented upon by the Sanitary Commissioner. But his notes do not definitely indicate what should be done to bring these up-to-date. We have no market for the city worth the name and if one is intended to be built, it is better that markets in Bombay and Calcutta should be studied by some municipal officer. The Conservancy system should be ranch improved. But what about overcrowding? It is the basis of all sanitation and we are sorry that nothing is said and less is done in this direction. It is the problem of problems and we cannot excuse the local authorities for their evident neglect of what is at the bottom of much of ill-health, premature death and endless suffering in the city.
