Prison Labour Corps

A recent commission issued by the Inspector General of Prisons in the United Provinces shows that since the beginning of the war 3,768 volunteer prisoners were released and sent up to Mesopotamia with the Labour Corps. They have been employed in loading and unloading steamers and barges at Basra and elsewhere, in road making, brick making. The statement says:- “On first arrival, a considerable number of desertion took place, but the men soon settled down and many favourable reports on their work and conduct have been received from officers, including the General Officer Commanding in Chief. Their general health has been good and the men appear to be comfortable and well off.  They are encouraged to play games, and special recreation tents with gramophones, newspapers, etc, have been provided for them. A considerable number have been allowed to return to India on leave.”
