Pauper Population in England.

ACCORDING to the 45th annual report of the Local Government Board the number of paupers in England and Wales it 1914-15 exclusive of Lunatics in the Asylums was 659,221 or 17.8 per 1,000 of the population. London, the metropolis claims 104,057 paupers or 23.0 per 1,000 of the population. This figure is inclusive of casual paupers who number about 41,000, but it is now happily considerably smaller than in any of the last three years. 

The figures, however, include 70,318 children, of whom 47,634 were between 3 and 16 years of age and 4,171 infants under 3 years of age. The amount spent on the relief of the total pauper population in England and Wales during 1914-15 was £15,663,558, including expenditure, defrayed from loan funds, and the expenditure on the London paupers alone amounted £ 3,928,181.
