One Rupee Notes.

THE  Englishman points out the great success of the one pound notes and ten shilling notes in England which were issued without any coin backing. "The issue of one rupee notes in this country has," says the paper, "been much talked of in Calcutta markets during the past three weeks, if only as a palliative in the present depleted condition of the coin reserve." It is presumed that if the Government of India has any such measure under consideration, it would meet with success in this country. The one pound notes and the ten shilling notes are only certificate of money and are not promises to pay coin. It is said that the issue of one rupee notes should be on the same lines. We are afraid the idea is hardly practicable.
