THE Government of Madras explains its position with regard to the question of the provision of additional facilities for secondary and higher education of the Mahomedan community. “The growing appreciation by the community of the importance of secondary education,” says the communique, “led it to realise how unfavourably it compares with other communities in respect of a collegiate education and stimulated a demand with which Government sympathises for a separate Mahomedan College. It seems to the Government that with a view to meeting the special circumstances and needs of the community throughout the Presidency the first Mahomedan college should be located in the Presidency town itself. The Government have, therefore, decided that any financial aid which they are able to promise to the advancement of this branch of Mahomedan education shall be given towards the establishment of a College in Madras.”
