India and After-War Problems.

Show comments

WHILE President Wilson and other statesmen dealing with weighty problems have been making it plain to the world that liberty and justice should rule the destinies of all alike, we have a singular position regarding after-war problem in India taken by certain Anglo-Indian exponents. One of the addresses presented to Mr. Montagu offered several reasons for opposing the grant of responsible Government to India among which is the following:—“The period following the cessation of the war will necessarily be one of a degree of stress and strain scarcely less severe than that which obtains while the war still lasts. Economic, financial, social and other problems affecting the whole future of the Empire must then come up and present themselves for attention not less strenuous of an enemy who during forty years has been organising all his energies and resources for the one purpose of dealing a deadly blow at the British Empire.”
