Housing conditions with cities

Show comments
ON Tuesday last under the auspices of the Bombay Co-operative Housing Association, an interesting paper on the above subject was read by Mr. Talmaki. The problems of housing various classes of city people in an industrial and commercial centre as Bombay were considered and the possibilities of extending the city in various directions and the means of communication were explained. Such open discussions on this subject with the people and the consideration of various financial and sanitary problems have an undoubted educative effect. The way for improvement is prepared and popular co-operation made easy. This example may well be followed by all thriving cities in India. Only the other day the question of creating open spaces in the city of Lahore, which is a most crowded one, was discussed at the Municipal Committee. But it was more theoretical than practical and few men seemed to be serious-minded, except the proposer. But if the question was first discussed at the association and the opinions of both experts and those concerned in the city welfare were gathered the way for practical work would be rendered easier.
