Honours for Schoolmasters.

Show comments

THE Pioneer has made a great discovery. It says that if schoolmasters are given suitable titles and their work is appreciated by Government, the problem of efficient teachers will be half solved. And as might be expected from one holding this view, it regrets that in the honours lists one seldom finds the names of educationists. “An efficient Deputy Collector or an Extra Assistant Commissioner,” it writes, “has a better chance of obtaining a title or a medal than an excellent and influential headmaster.” We are not sure that successful educationalists in India are hankering after recognition of this particular kind. The reputation they enjoy among their own class and the educated community is often a better recognition of their work. They may covet an honour or other distinction conferred by a University or other learned bodies in recognition. But what schoolmasters really desire is pay and prospects similar to those offered in other departments of the public service requiring equal attainments.
