Freedom of the Press.

FREEDOM of the Press would be impossible in any country, said a European Chamber of Commerce in its address to Mr. Montagu, if it became abused beyond a certain point. It is necessary to enquire as to what either the exact meaning or the implication of this remark is, but there is a broad question. Who, pray, are the men who have been abusing the freedom of the Press in India in recent years, that is, since the policy of the Government underwent a certain change for the better? Who said when the partition was annulled that "Lord Hardinge must go?" Who, more recently, have been abusing and vilifying even a higher authority than the late Viceroy, the present Secretary of State, even since his speech on the Mesopotamia Report and even more particularly since the announcement of August 20? Which European Chamber of Commerce in the country has raised its little finger to either prevent or suppress all this abuse of freedom of the Press? It seems the abuse becomes intolerable only when the offender is an Indian.
