THE recent endeavours of Vaids and Hakims to revive the study of indigenous medical science and treatment of patients have led to the establishment of medical schools and dispensaries in some parts of the country. It is encouraging to find the States of Travancore and Mysore doing more in this direction than others and there are several Ayurvedic Hospitals which receive Government grant. In Travancore, according to a correspondent, a department of Vaidyasalas is established and it is doing useful work. A local paper suggests the following improvements in the department, viz., (1) The imparting of practical and scientific instruction in the Ayurvedic Pathasala: (2) the establishment of a hospital attached to the Institution: and (3) the laying out of a garden for the cultivation of medicinal herbs and plants. It is also suggested that the head of the department should be one who is well-versed in both the English and Indian systems of medicine.
