Efficiency of Workmen in India.

Show comments

MR. S.R. Davar  gives a remarkable instance of inefficiency of mill-hands. According to the statement of a Superintendent Manager of a first class cotton mill in Bombay, Indian workmen were not attracted by higher wages to be regular in attendance. In a month of 26 working days, 20 per cent. of the workmen seldom put in an attendance of more than 16 to 18 days and the other 50 to 60 per cent. on an average keep away for at least a week. Only 15 to 20 per cent. attend 24 working days. An offer of Rs. 2 extra over the usual wages of Rs. 14 for regular attendance had no effect. It is explained this amazing lack of effort is due to the low standard of living of the workmen, who are satisfied, if they earn from Rs. 8 to 10 a month.
