Education and religious funds

Show comments
SIR Subramania Iyer of Madras who presided over a public protest meeting held n Monday last at Calicutt against the University examination results, made an important suggestion regarding Sir Sankaran Nair. He said that the chief function of the new education member of the Viceroy's Council was to mould the policy of the Government in the matter of education so as to make it suitable to the country. He said no one could do it more effectively than Sir Sankaran Nair. The suggestion he made was the utilisation of religious funds for educational purposes. The founders of religious institutions, said the speaker, never intended that the money should be used for puja-making alone. The surplus funds could justifiably by used by the trustees for encouraging education of the poor and deserving. The Secretary of State had sanctioned the amendment of the law relating to religious endowments. The question will soon be decided by the Government of India and if Sir Sankaran Nair is favourable to the idea, most educational institutions would be strengthened.
