An amusing incident is reported from Calcutta showing the popular and mercantile view of higher education and the poor emoluments of University graduates. At Kyd Street Police Court, says a Calcutta paper, an M.Sc. of the Calcutta University going up for the B.L. examination complained against his neighbor, a watch repairer that the latter abused him and obstructed his studies by playing a gramophone. When he remonstrated with the watch repairer and asked him to stop the noise so that he may work for his examination, the accused replied that education was of no avail nowadays and he would do better to eat, drink and be merry than to go on studying for examinations. The case was compounded but the conflict of ideals is significant.
