A Gujranwala Case.

ONE of the worst cases under Martial Law that we have come across so far both from the talk that we have had with persons who ought to know as well from the copies of representations to Government that have been sent to us is that of Lala Behari Sachdeva, son of Lala Jawanda Mal, caste Aurora, of Gujranwala, who was convicted, along with this brother, in what is known as the Gujranwala Leader’s Case and sentenced to transportation for life, and whose sentence has subsequently been reduced by the Lieutenant-Governor to one of four years’ rigorous imprisonment. Substantial as the reduction is on the face of it, Behari Lal’s is exactly one of those cases in which no mere reduction can meet the ends of justice. We are firmly convinced that Sir Edward Maclagan himself will come to this conclusion if he will go through the record of the case and the excellent representation which has been submitted to him on behalf of the prisoner.
