IN the August number of "East and West," which is edited by Sirdar Jogendra Singh, the present political situation in India is discussed in a couple of editorial notes. After commending Lord Chalmsford for certain minor reforms he introduced, the writer makes a plea for the adoption of democratic methods and for the co-operation of the people and the Government for the attainment of higher ideals. "Passive acquiescence in the existing order has led to a tendency to regard the people of India as sheep. They are expected to be satisfied with the promise that the future will shape their destinies in good time. The mind of man works the same way in the East as in the West.
