“The Bread Problem”

SPEAKING recently at Calcutta on the above subject Sir P.C. Ray said in his opinion the Calcutta University had degenerated into a graduate-manufacturing factory. Many on out-turn of the University sighs at his failure to secure a decent job and wishes that he would better have failed at the examinations in which case it would have been an excuse for his unemployment. He drew out a vivid picture of the miserable physique caused by the labours incident to success at the University examinations and also of the meagre value which passes now-a-days returned to the passed students. In showing how college education was losing its value, the speaker made parody of the well know Bengali saying:--“The one who reads and writes, rides a coach and four.” He observed that at the present time the correct reading of the line would be:--“The one who reads and writes, fasts.”
