Auckland, October 3

Riding on SK Uthappa’s brace, the Indian men’s hockey team posted its second win against New Zealand A in the second game of the Kiwi tour here today.

The first quarter saw both the teams going on the attack, but the Indians, high on confidence after the 3-1 win yesterday, found the first goal in the 5th minute. The goal came after a move between three Karnataka players. SV Sunil entered the circle before passing the ball to Nikkin Thimmaiah, who found an unmarked Uthappa.

India continued to put on the pressure and maintained good ball possession, keeping the opponents’ defence busy all through. India doubled their lead through Uthappa’s brilliant solo effort at the start of the third quarter.

In the last quarter, New Zealand A came out strong, earning a penalty corner. But PR Sreejesh saved India again. But the home team’s persistence finally paid off in the 57th minute — Stephen Jenness scored to decrease the lead. The Indians held on to register their second consecutive win.
