New Delhi, August 22

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided to induct the country’s Under-17 World Cup squad into the I-League fold from this season.

The AIFF’s technical committee, which met in Bengaluru today, agreed to the federation’s proposal to field the core group of the U-17 squad as a ‘developmental side’ in the I-League, beginning November. The side would also have players from India’s U-19 squad.

The side would continue to train under Portuguese coach, Luis Norton de Matos, and would be based out of either Delhi or Mumbai. AIFF would extend Matos’ contract beyond the World Cup, it has been learnt. A combined squad comprising U-17 and U-19 boys would be fielded for the Asian U-19 qualifiers from November 4.
