Lucknow, January 3

Defending champions Chennai Smashers went down to Delhi Dashers after they had to concede the last match of the tie due to an ankle injury to Gabrielle Adcock in the Premier Badminton League here today. The trump match, which would have decided the outcome of the tie, could not be completed as Gabrielle twisted her ankle while returning a shot.

Sindhu loses

Earlier, world No. 6 Sung Ji Hyun beat world No. 3 PV Sindhu 11-15 15-13 15-14 to give Delhi a 2-1 advantage.

Chennai had opened with a win as the men’s pair of Sumeeth Reddy and Lee Yang beat Ivan Sozonov and Vladimir Ivanov 15-13 15-11 in Delhi’s trump match.

But Vincent Wong Wing Ki beat Brice Leverdez 15-10 15-13 and Tain Houwei beat Tanongsak Saemsomboonsuk 15-14 15-10 to make it 1-1.

After Sung’s upset win, the onus was on Gabrielle and Chris Adcock. The duo was trailing 5-6 in the first game when Gabrielle suffered the injury and had to be stretchered off. — PTI
