Anand finishes seventh after losing to Aronian

Viswanathan Anand failed to capitalise on his chances and went down to Levon Aronian in the ninth and final round to finish joint-seventh in the Altibox Norway chess tournament here. Anand finished with four wins and five losses. Magnus Carlsen lost the Armageddon game to Fabiano Caruana. Carlsen still won the tournament with 13.5 points, with Aronian finishing tied-second alongside Yu Yangyi on 10.5. Caruana finished fourth.

Jinson betters 1500m national record
Asian Games gold medallist Jinson Johnson marginally bettered his own national record timing in 1500m while competing at the Next Generation Athletics Meet in the Netherlands. Johnson clocked 3 minutes, 37.62 seconds to finish sixth in Nijmegen on Saturday. His previous record was 3:37.86, which he set during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Ajay Kumar Saroj clocked 3:40.39. PU Chitra won the women’s event by clocking 4:13.52.

Canada beat NZ, reach Rd 2 of women’s World Cup 
Canada beat New Zealand 2-0 in a women’s World Cup Group E game on Saturday to cement a place in the second round and leave the Kiwis on the brink of elimination. Earlier in Valenciennes, the Netherlands saw off a spirited Cameroon 3-1 to also move to six points in the group and secure their place in the last-16. Canada had beaten Cameroon 1-0 in their opening game while New Zealand had battled hard before losing to an injury-time Dutch goal. On Sunday, Sweden produced a breathtaking display of attacking football to thrash Thailand 5-1 in Nice and book their place in the last-16.

Maurizio Sarri was named the new coach of Juventus after his exit from Chelsea following a troubled single campaign in London was confirmed by both clubs. Sarri returns to Italy on a three-year deal just a season after leaving Napoli for Stamford Bridge, where he failed to garner fan support despite winning the Europa League and returning the Blues to the Champions League thanks to a third-placed finish in the Premier League.
