Top gymnasts, including Dipa Karmakar and Rakesh Patra, breathed a sigh of relief after the Sports Authority of India (SAI) cleared Gymnastic Federation of India’s (GFI) proposal to have an open trial for the Asian Championships on June 7 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. Over 12 gymnasts had written to SAI, Sports Ministry and GFI, expressing concerns regarding the trials, which were announced on May 17, with just a two-day notice for the Mongolia event to be held from June 19 to 22. GFI had said that the selection trials were not open but limited to just 8-10 gymnasts, who were selected for the national coaching camp during the trials conducted by SAI on April 12 and 13.

Bereaved Asif Ali in Pakistan squad for World Cup
Grieving father Asif Ali and the experienced pace duo of Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz were included in Pakistan’s final 15-man squad for the ODI World Cup. Asif’s 19-month-old daughter Noor Fatima, who had been undergoing cancer treatment in the US, died on Sunday but he is set to join his teammates after her funeral in Lahore, chief selector Inzaman-ul-Haq said. "We are with Asif in this tough time. He will return to Pakistan and then go back before the warm-up matches," he said. Amir and Riaz were included in the squad following Pakistan’s 0-4 loss to England in the ODI series. The selectors have axed all-rounder Faheem Ashraf and left-arm pacer Junaid Khan from their initial World Cup squad to make way for the two senior players. — Agencies
