Ludhiana girl Simranjit Kaur wins gold at international boxing tournament

CHANDIGARH: Pugilist Simranjit Kaur from Chakar village in Ludhiana district won a gold medal in the 23rd President’s Cup International Boxing Tournament held at Labuan Baju, Indonesia.

Pugilist Simranjit Kaur from Chakar village in Ludhiana district won a gold medal in the 23rd President’s Cup International Boxing Tournament held at Labuan Baju, Indonesia. 

The Indian contingent won 7 gold and 2 silver medals and comprised of four female pugilists. Apart from Kaur, Olympic Bronze Medallist M.C. Mary Kom, Jamuna Bero and Monica also won gold medals.

Punjab Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi congratulated Simranjit Kaur for her achievement.

Singh said: “Girls from Chakar have made the name of their village resonate in every corner of the globe.”

The credit for her achievement goes to her parents, coaches and the Sher-E-Punjab Academy of Chakar, Sodhi added.

Kaur defeated Hasanah Huswatun of Indonesia 5-0. Simranjit had won the bronze medal in World Championship last year.Simranjit used to represent the country in 64 kg category but she now she participates in the 60 kg category as the Olympics has 60 kg category. Earlier, Simranjit Kaur had won a silver medal in the Asian Championship at Bangkok.

It is also noteworthy that earlier another pugilist from Chakar Mandeep Kaur Sandhu had brought laurels to the village by becoming the Junior World Champion.
