The probe into allegations of official apathy levelled by marathon runner OP Jaisha (in pic) has been delayed as the athlete is recovering from swine flu and will need at least a week's rest. Jaisha, who returned from Rio with fever and body ache last week, was hospitalised yesterday after she tested positive for H1N1, two days after another athlete Sudha Singh was found to be suffering from the same disease. “Jaisha has been hospitalised for H1N1 and at this point in time, the athlete will not be allowed to travel. She needs rest for at least six to seven days,” Sports Authority of India's Dr Sarla said.

Appeal for Pistorius sentence rejected

A South African judge said on Friday she would not grant permission to state prosecutors to appeal Oscar Pistorius' six-year murder sentence, saying their petition had no reasonable prospects of success. Judge Thokozile Masipa Masipa had sentenced the Paralympic gold medallist in July for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013, but the prosecution had said the decision was too lenient. Pistorius' defence had earlier argued the state was prejudiced and had dragged the case on for too long.

Narsingh would have won silver, claims WFI official

Continuing to back dope-tainted wrestler Narsingh Yadav, a top Wrestling Federation of India official claimed the 74-kg freestyle wrestler would have clinched the silver medal had he taken part in the Rio Olympics instead of being banned for four years by the CAS. “Narsingh would have won at least a silver medal, I can assure you that,” said WFI secretary VN Prasood.
