Gold for Neeraj as pugilists shine at Nation’s Cup

Reigning national champion Neeraj (51kg) struck gold, while three others settled for silver medals as India’s women boxers finished third at the sixth Nation’s Cup in the Serbian city of Vrbas. Haryana girl Neeraj, who was competing in her maiden international tournament, defeated Kazakhstan’s Jaina Shekerbekova to win the lone gold for the country. Sarjubala Devi (48kg), Priyanka Chaudhary (60kg), Pooja (69kg) and Seema Poonia (+81kg) had to be content with silver medals. Sarjubala went down (2-3) to Russia’s Yulia Chumgalakova, Priyanka lost to Kazakhstan’s Rimma Volosenko. Pooja fought hard against Valentina Khalzova but ended up on the losing side. Seema, who made it to the final without fighting a single bout as her category featured only three boxers, went down to Kazakh Lyazzat Kungenbayeva. India thus finished the event with a gold, four silver and one bronze medal. The bronze medal came through Kavita Goyat, who lost her semifinal contest owing to a knee injury.

Srinivasan to meet TNCA  district secys informally

Former BCCI president and outgoing Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) chief N Srinivasan will be meeting the district secretaries tomorrow amidst speculations about who would take over from the Chennai strongman as the head of the state unit. Srinivasan is no longer eligible to carry on as the president of the TNCA but is likely to meet his loyalists in districts association “informally” and it may be the last time. Sources denied that the meeting had anything to do with a breakway national cricket body being formed.

Delhi beat UP in inconsequential PWL tie

Delhi Sultans ended their disastrous Pro Wrestling League (PWL) campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Uttar Pradesh Dangal in an inconsequential tie between the two bottom-placed teams here on Sunday. Delhi thus registered their only win of this year’s PWL, finishing with a mere two points from five league matches. UP finished failed to win a single match and finished at the bottom. — Agencies
