Nice, June 28

English football team chief coach Roy Hodgson has announced that he will step down following his squad’s shocking 1-2 loss to Iceland. Hodgson, who refused to answer questions at the post-match press conference on Monday and only read a statement, said he was “extremely disappointed” about their Euro 2016 exit and that “now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry and extremely talented group of players.”

Rooney quashes retirement talks

Following England’s humiliating defeat, skipper Wayne Rooney has dismissed suggestions that he is considering retirement from the national team. Expressing his desire to continue playing for England, Rooney insisted that he felt extremely proud to be a part of the national side.

“I feel disappointed, it’s a hard one to take. We had a good chance of going through. After such a good start, conceding two sloppy goals, we’re disappointed,” he said. — Agencies
