After a long time, the Phogat sisters will be in the wrestling arena with a thousand eyeballs on them during the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Bharat Kesri Dangal.

Mahabir Singh Phogat’s three daughters Geeta Phogat (68kg), Sangeeta (57kg) and Ritu (50kg) will represent Haryana as the state’s team vies for the top prize of Rs 1 crore in the mat version of dangal at the Bhim Stadium, Bhiwani, from Wednesday.

In the men’s section, Haryana’s challenge will be presented by Naveen (57kg), Shrawan (65kg), Amit (74kg), Deepak (86kg) and Satender (+97kg). As many as 80 wrestlers from eight teams will be participating in 10 categories (5 men, 5 women) in the competition, which would conclude on March 23. The top team will be awarded Rs 1 crore, to be shared by 10 wrestlers; the team that finishes second will take home Rs 50 lakh, the third-finishers will get Rs 25 lakh and the fourth-placed team will be richer by Rs 10 lakh. The coaches of the winning teams would also be awarded. In the men’s section, the weight categories are 57kg, 65kg, 74kg, 86kg, and 97kg; in the women’s section, the categories are 50kg, 57kg, 62kg, 68kg, and 72kg.

KISG players feted

Addressing the gathering at the prize distribution function for the medal-winning sportspersons of the Khelo India School Games at the Haryana Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh, Chief Minister Manohar Lal said, “It is a matter of pride that Haryana has bagged first position by winning a total of 102 medals including 38 gold, 26 silver and 38 bronze in various disciplines.”
