A 25-year-old youth, who had slapped two youngsters for allegedly harassing a friend’s sister, was reportedly beaten to death by supporters of the accused.

The youth, his brother-in-law and two others was beaten up on September 18. He was rushed to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where he succumbed to injuries late last night.

The deceased has been identified as Dharamraj, alias Vicky, of Roop Nagar, Bhamian Kalan, Jamalpur. He was working at a hosiery unit. He is survived by father, mother and a sister. His wife had died after an illness in January.

A murder case has been registered against seven persons — Sanjay Chauhan, his brother Upinder Chauhan, Nandu Chauhan, Indrasan and his brother Inderjit Kumar, Anuj Gupta alias Kalu and Gurvinder Singh.

Deceased’s father Rajinder Chaudhary stated that on September 17, Inderjit Singh Kariya and Rajesh had allegedly harassed the sister of his son’s friend Sonu, following which Dharamraj slapped the accused. While Rajesh admitted his mistake and left the city, Inderjit had no regrets.

On September 18, Gurvinder asked him to send Vicky and Sonu outside the house of Sanjay, a contractor, for a compromise between them and Inderjit.

Chaudhary, his son Vicky, son-in-law Ratan Dev and Kulwinder Singh Goldy reached there around 9.30 pm on Tuesday, the father said.

“Blaming Vicky for forcing Rajesh to leave the city, they attacked us with heavy sticks and bricks. They cornered Vicky and Kalu hit my son on the head with a brick. I raised the alarm, following which the assailants fled, leaving my son for dead. We rushed him to the Civil Hospital, from where doctors referred him to Patiala, where he died,” the father alleged.

Jamalpur SHO Ravinderpal said raids were on to nab the accused.
