Tension prevailed near Sri Guru Arjun Dev Government College today when some armed SUV-borne youths reportedly fired into the air outside the college today.

The incident occurred when the polling to elect the office-bearers of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) for the college unit was going on in the college.

Mintoo, a rehriwala, said a group of armed youths gathered outside the college and had heated exchange of words. He added that one of the groups fired five shots into the air near SGAD Khalsa Public School and managed to escape from the spot.

However, Sub-Inspector Ashwani Kumar has denied any such incident, saying he himself was present on the college premises.

Meanwhile, Jagdeep Singh, Manochahal Kalan and Gurlal Singh Bhojia were elected president and vice-president of the college unit of the NSUI, respectively.

In anther report, Harpreet Singh Khanna and Gurpal Singh Sangha were elected president and vice-president of the college unit of the local Sewa Devi unit of the NSUI.
